Joanna McCoy

"Lookit you." He crouched on his heels, palms spread over his knees, and squinted. "How old are you now?"
She giggled, and poked his nose.
"I'm nine."
He scrunched his nose and whistled slowly. "You're nine," he drawled. A gentle smile spread over his face, but Joanna thought his eyes looked sad.
"All the medicine we have, and still nothing to stop your children from growing up without you." He shook his head, and his eyebrow quirked. "You're probably too old for the present I got you."
Joanna squealed and tackled him. Her cry of "Where, where?" lost in laughter as he rolled to his feet, hefted her over his shoulder, and hauled her down the hall. Joanna clung to his back like a baby koala bear, hugging his neck so tightly he coughed and twisted his head, planting a kiss on her temple with a muttered, "ain't never gonna get there if you strangle me first!"
She only hugged him tighter.

Dr. Leonard McCoy was 22 when Joanna was born (according to the Star Trek Concordance by Bjo Trimble). Shortly afterwards, his wife left him, and he went into Starfleet. I think he was a good dad, though, even from far away, since his daughter grew up to follow in his footsteps and become a nurse. But I always thought he was very sad not to see her often. ;_;
