Black Magic by HapticMimesis Black Magic by HapticMimesis
A young Snape, metaphorically seduced by the Dark Arts. Fascinated, enthralled and disarmed, he searched deeply the heart of his own demise. A tragic love affair, in which his passion made his end.

For the Spinners End third challenge, "Magical Snape".

Of course, Snape and the wizarding world he inhabits belong to JK Rowling. :)

Edit: WHAAAAT??? A DD???? THANK YOU!!! :D :la: :dummy: :boogie: Thanks in particular to Vizen for the recommendation, and to all the lovely people over at :iconspinners--end: for their friendship and support! :) <3 Honestly, this just made my day. Probably made my entire year, really. Happy Birthday, Mr. Snape, sir!

Today is Snape's birthday, and what better celebration than featuring a wonderful Fan Art of him? Black Magic by ~HapticMimesis shows a younger Severus, being tempted by the Dark Arts. What really fascinates me is the expression of wonder in his eyes, searching for an answer, seduced by the dark side. ( Suggested by Vizen and Featured by alexandrasalas )

God, I love your Snape. I want to marry him. I love your oil painting like style as well, and the skull is such a fitting, symbolic image.

Love the skin-tones here, so few Snape pictures really capture that sallow complexion the books describe.

 Yes. And unfortunately, like many of us, his undoing was his own choice. He may have been horribly mislead and disillusioned, but ultimately, he himself chose to walk the dark path. However, what makes him compelling, in my opinion, was not the pity we feel for his pain and distress, but rather his beautiful, tragic journey back to the light. He recognized his error, and made superhuman efforts to redeem himself, despite knowing that the person he prized most was lost to him forever. He ultimately gave his very life, and probably considered it an equitable trade. That, for me, is what I love most about him. :)

For me too. I still feel sad for the fact that Lily would have loved him back if it wasn't for his attraction for the dark arts. :/

It's ironic for poor Severus; he wears his fate on his forearm the entire time. He thought he was choosing a way of life, and it only brought him death. It still makes me sad to think about it. :'(

I love your idea, and this artwork really did deserve a DD.
I don't think that Snape entered the Dark Arts out of malice, he was just looking for acceptance (and he was way too curious).

I agree. JKR herself mentioned that one of his biggest motivations in joining the DE's was to impress Lily. He just wanted to be part of something big and powerful. :( Sad story.

Indeed, I'd also say that the Marauders drove him into joining Voldemort (ironic isn't it, they were so against the Dark Arts yet take a look at the stuff they did).
His alienation at school, abuse at home, and the persuasive snakes in his dorm promising him glory ... is it any wonder?
It's a real life fact, persecuted boys tend to join gangs to feel worthy, and the gang members welcome them with open arms before they reveal their true motives.
Nevertheless, we have sufficient evidence that he committed few, if any, heinous crimes that the DE's are so renown for. Bella said herself that he's "All talk and no work", and seeing as he was Voldemort's spy, he would have had to keep a low cover. His record's completely clean too.
There is much more evidence as well. One of the most important being how he always rushes in when's there's trouble, for no matter who the potential victim is (he totally has a conscience).
Sorry if this is a lot of writing, I'm just in a very Snape phase today :)

I agree. Why join the "good side" if all your greatest enemies are over there? Frankly, Voldemort and Co. weren't even that bad during the first war. In fact, their numbers far outweighed their opponents in wizarding Britain. It's very little wonder Snape joined ranks with them.

I don't think that he did anything that would qualify for *Bella's* definition of a ruthless death eater; however, by the time the sixth book rolls around, he's gained the respect and fear of all of them. When he steps onto the astronomy tower, everyone draws back and gives him place as leader, waiting on his next move. Even Bellatrix. So, I think that she sensed his hesitation to shatter his soul with murder, but I'm pretty sure that he was a cold, ruthless DE when he needed to be. Otherwise he wouldn't have kept his place, especially as a convincing spy. You can only avoid so much without suspicion when you're the right-hand man. And before the war and Lily's death, he was eager to earn the Dark Lord's esteem, and would have gone to even greater lengths. He's just not psycho. I think all intelligent, sane wizards recognized the danger that murder posed to their souls, and therefore avoided it when they could. I mean, how many characters do you see killing on a regular basis? They'd far rather banish each other to a slow death in Azkaban.

Don't worry, I've been in a Snape phase for a very long time. It won't bother me. :)
